musings on teaching

I will be teaching our second workshop this week...and I must admit I'm pretty excited. This is better than Christmas, or goodie bags or jelly filled doughnuts. I'm not sure what to expect, how the days will unfold, unravel, how the flowers will come to be, what my attendees will teach me! There are lessons to be learned, fun to be had, wine to be drunk, flowers to be arranged, hours of creating just for the sake of it.
I have had great teachers. And some not so great. But isn't teaching the most dynamic experience? Isn't there one teacher in your life who truly made an impact, who changed the way you saw things, who believed in you, who showed you something you couldn't see all by yourself? I'm pretty sure I'm not that teacher - but I want to be! Who knows...maybe with a little help from my worldly little Alice(modeling a lovely hair wreath above) we will be in good shape. To top it all off some of my favorite people will be there. (though not all of them...you know who you are.) Can't wait to share everything here when we emerge on the other side!

some flowers for now...and later. I just love this clematis vine!

Catching up

Just a week until the Workshop!!! I am really looking forward to this and have a wonderful group of attendees and some amazing vendors- PLUS a beautiful location, flowers and so on to make it all so fun. I actually can't sleep some nights thinking about all of the possibilities. So...even though I have some more published work to show off I thought a few images from the studio would be a better fit for how I'm feeling right now. Really wanting to get back to my roots and explore how to show other people how to design, how to break it down, simplify it and make is accessible and enjoyable. Not actually an easy task, I find, as I start to take it all apart step by step, and begin to work backwards through my own process and evolution. But really that's just what it is...an evolution. Always changing, always altering my approach, maybe in a different mood, maybe just working with unfamiliar materials. Here are a few images from this summer's wedding which I really love.

Published in Martha Stewart Weddings

Well...I have been eagerly awaiting the day when I could share this refreshingly, fun, bold, and stunning wedding with you. Rebecca Stone and I had the great pleasure of traveling to Useppa Island in Florida for this unique wedding with Elle and Kyle. To say the least - their enthusiasm and desire to push the design to the 100th degree was truly inspiring. They gave us complete freedom to be bold, be playful, be inventive, push things beyond the normal comfort zone of "wedding."

Rebecca's sensational design capabilities cannot be denied...awning striped tablecloth, wood slab risers and lucite cubes for the tabletop arrangements, fish flatware (a sweet nod to the florida location), edison bulb installation, panton chairs, and those umbrellas!!!!!!!! That ceremony was likely the most vibrant and beautiful I have ever seen and it was without flowers!

You can see this wedding in the current Martha Stewart Wedding Destinations issue or view it online here. Photographed by Max Wanger...need I say more? Enjoy!

june rubies

This was the Ruby wedding we did in June. Not Ruby the color but Ruby the family. Fabulous people who I honestly cannot say enough nice things about. They were trusting, caring, thankful and so appreciative of all the work we did for them. Actually...the gardenia bouquet previous post was the sample arrangement I did for Debbie. Though I am still waiting to see the professional images from Amy& Stuart...who no doubt got some unforgettable shots. Hope to share those soon! Plus, Curtis of Living Cinema captured this wedding on film. His work is so touching. Wish I had known him when Ken I tied the knot!

Coral peonies, pitcher plant, queen anne's lace!!!! I felt like these arrangements were so alive.

Summer blues

It's kind of what you think..but not really. I do feel the stress of a long season with a far away end in sight (which also gives me the blues a little), but the summer blues that I have right now are flower blues and purples. Working on a crazy beautiful wedding for this Saturday at Vibiana (a converted Cathedral from the 1800"s that is hard to describe with plain old words.) I'm up late thinking about it, pondering what I have left to do over the next three days, how to accomplish it, how it will look. Funny thing actually...I have an idea about what it will look like, but I don't KNOW completely. Sometimes I feel as if the flower thing is like being part of a renegade installation art crew that shows up with a van full of flowers and has 2-4 hours to literally transform a space. Did I mention there is a lot of purple involved? I guess I really like purple as it turns out.
I write this as Alice is kicking me, scrambling and stretching in her sleep. Growing like a weed this one. Big brain too! Right now she is probably dreaming about being Spiderman. She is enamored and in awe of him of late. Webbing and whatnot. To bed, to dreams....

a little sample bouquet of gardenias I did for a June bride. Something heavenly and timeless about gardenias, no?
